Mating Press Position: The Deepest Missionary, Built for Her Body

The internet named it like a nature documentary. Underneath the meme is the deepest, closest position in the missionary family, and women keep asking for it by name.

Let us get the name out of the way first, because it sounds like something narrated over wildlife footage. The term comes from Japanese adult animation: a hentai artist coined it in 2013, the internet adopted it as a meme, and the meme grew legs. Strip the cartoon away and what remains is a real position, the deepest and closest arrangement the missionary family has to offer. And in the places where women talk to each other honestly about sex, it keeps surfacing as a request. Made in their own words, by name.

So here is the woman's version of the page the internet never wrote: what the position actually is, what it does for your body, the fantasy it carries (we will name that one plainly), and the rules that keep its depth on the right side of delicious.

The position, plainly

What the Mating Press Position Actually Is

The fold, the weight, the depth. That is the entire machine.

Start in missionary. Now fold. Your legs lift and press back toward your shoulders, knees near your ribs, ankles up by his ears or hooked over his arms. He follows you down: hips above yours, chest meeting your chest, his weight arriving on top of the fold. Penetration angles downward and reaches as deep as your two bodies allow.

Position catalogs have listed this shape for decades under politer names. It is the anvil, knees to chest, with his torso lowered all the way. It is legs-on-shoulders missionary with the air between you removed. The new name stuck because the internet enjoys saying it, and because the name tells the truth about the mood: this is missionary at its most primal setting.

What it gives you

What the Mating Press Gives Her Body

Three things, and they stack.

Depth that reaches everything. The fold tips your pelvis up and shortens the angle of approach, so every stroke lands deep and toward the front wall. Women who love deep pressure describe this as the position where nothing is held back from them.

His full weight. Most positions ration body contact. This one maximizes it: chest, hips, thighs, his breath at your ear. Affectionate full-body touch carries measurable weight for well-being and closeness, and many women describe the pressed-down feeling as being claimed and held in the same motion. The weighted-blanket effect, with eye contact.

The charge. This position is honest about what it is staging: he has you completely, and you chose that. Power-exchange imaginations are mainstream equipment, and the numbers below say so. The mating press lets you act a slice of that fantasy out with your husband on a Tuesday, no costume required.

The fantasy, counted
64.6%
of women have fantasized about being dominated by a partner
3 in 10
adults have fantasized about pregnancy as an erotic scenario, women at nearly the same rate as men
1 in 5
women reliably orgasm from penetration alone, so keep the grind or a hand in play

Joyal et al. 2015; Lehmiller 2018; Herbenick et al. 2018.

One honesty clause before we go further. Depth is sensation, and sensation is glorious, and depth alone is still a long shot for orgasm: fewer than one woman in five reliably gets there from penetration by itself. If you want this position to finish what it starts, keep his pubic bone grinding against you when he is deep, or slide a hand into the small space the fold creates. The position leaves room for it. Use the room.

Named honestly

The Fantasy Underneath the Mating Press

The name says mating and the name means it. Here is the warm, frank version.

For a lot of women, part of the heat here is the breeding fantasy: the staged feeling of being taken for keeps, at the deepest point, on purpose. If that is in your head, you have company. In the largest American survey of sexual fantasies, around three in ten adults said they had fantasized about pregnancy as an erotic scenario, and women reported it at nearly the same rate as men.

There is a particular freedom in your forties and fifties in borrowing the body's oldest script purely for the pleasure of the performance. The stakes left the building. The charge stayed.

The honest costs

What the Mating Press Asks of You

Three bills come due in this position. All three are negotiable.

The cervix rule. Deep pressure near the cervix can read as delicious on one stroke and sharp on the very next one, with no warning between them. Arousal moves the line, depth of stroke moves the line, the day of the month moves the line. So agree on one word before you fold, something like "easy" or "shallow," and agree that it acts instantly.

Why the one-word rule exists
30%
of women reported pain during their most recent vaginal intercourse
57%
of those women told their partner. The rest stayed quiet and paid for it

U.S. probability sample of 1,738 adults. Herbenick et al., 2015; reasons for the silence in Carter et al., 2019.

Women stay quiet to protect the mood or his feelings, and pay with their own body. Pain is information. Send it.

The fold itself. Knees to ribs is a real ask of your hips and hamstrings, held under load. It is a short-burst position by design, and there is no medal for staying in it past comfort.

Breathing. His full weight on a folded body compresses your chest. He takes some weight on his elbows, and you agree on a tap signal that means lift, now, no discussion.

Ways in

The Half Press and Other Doors Into the Mating Press

Five versions, from gentlest to fullest. Most women keep two.

What each one changes for you
  1. The half press

Your legs around his waist instead of folded back, his weight still low and full. You keep most of the closeness and the charge, lose most of the hamstring bill, and your legs become the depth control. The best first version, and for many women the keeper version.

  2. The pillow lift

A firm pillow under your hips before he enters. It does part of the fold's work for you, so your legs fold less for the same angle.

  3. The slow press

He goes deep and stays, grinding instead of thrusting. Constant pressure everywhere, his base against your clitoris, zero impact at the deep end. The version for nights when sharp is hovering nearby.

  4. The deep grind with a governor

Your hand flat on his hip is a depth throttle he can feel instantly, faster than any word. You set the stroke length; he supplies the weight.

  5. One leg down

One leg folded back, the other around his waist. Half the stretch, a twist of angle, and an easy retreat path mid-act.

If you want depth with no flexibility bill at all, prone bone delivers it lying flat. If tonight calls for the gentler end of this family, the missionary position page holds the variant with actual studies behind it. The full map lives in our positions guide.

Comfort is a feature

The Mating Press in Midlife

Your body is allowed to have terms. This position will sign them.

Warm hamstrings negotiate; cold ones file complaints. Let the fold arrive gradually, leg by leg, a few minutes into missionary rather than as the opening move. The pillow lift and the half press exist precisely for hips that have opinions now. Lubricant is equipment for any deep position in these decades, the same category as the pillow. And treat the full press as a chapter, two or three intense minutes inside a longer encounter, rather than the whole book.

The stakes left the building. The charge stayed.
Tonight's experiment

The Whole Assignment

Fold at your own speed. Keep one hand on the throttle.

Start in ordinary missionary, pillow already under your hips. When you want more, lift one leg, then the other, and draw your knees back yourself, at your own speed, while he lowers his chest to yours. Keep your hand on his hip as the throttle. Stay folded for two minutes, then drop your legs to his waist for the half press and let the closeness carry the rest.

Mating Press: FAQ

What is the mating press position?
A deep variation of missionary: you lie on your back with your legs folded back toward your shoulders while your partner leans fully forward over you, chest to chest, penetrating downward at maximum depth with full body contact. The anvil and legs-on-shoulders missionary are its closest catalog relatives.
Where does the name come from?
From Japanese hentai. An artist coined the term in 2013, and the internet carried it from animation into everyday vocabulary. The position itself is far older than the name; catalogs have listed the same shape for decades under names like the anvil.
Does the mating press hurt?
It can, and the cervix is usually why: deep pressure there can flip from pleasurable to sharp in a single stroke. Build arousal first, use lubricant, agree on a one-word depth signal before you start, and switch to the half press or the slow grind if sharpness appears. Pain is information, and roughly half of women who feel it during sex never say so. Say so.
How deep is too deep?
Wherever sharp begins, and that line moves with arousal, angle, and even the day of your cycle. Your hand on his hip sets stroke length faster than words can. Depth is a dial you own, on every stroke, every night.
